Garbage Collection

After months of discussion and weighing all the pros and cons, Town Council decided to contract Loraas Disposal for biweekly curbside waste collection, commencing in November 2025. There will be no cost change in the utility billing for residential garbage pickup. There could possibly be an increase for commercial garbage, where the volume of garbage exceeds the cart size in a two week period. Business owners will be contacted over the next month to ensure their needs are met. The Town employees will continue to pick up garbage until November 6, 2025, after which Loraas shall be in charge of garbage and recycling services; the roll out for the waste carts is scheduled for the end of October 2025. Your waste cart can be kept alongside your recycling cart. The carts will be rolled out and picked up in the same spot, streetside. There will be no more alley pick up. The pick up from Loraas will alternate – one week will be waste cart pick up, the next week will be recycling. A calendar will be sent out and accompany the October 2025 utility billing. If you have any questions concerning this change in service, please reach out to the Town Office.

[One of the biggest challenges moving forward for the Town was to replace the existing garbage truck. This is a large capital cost that moving to Loraas Disposal will eliminate. This will also free up public works employees’ time. Even though the Town has a bylaw in place, many residents were still disposing of bags of garbage exceeding weight limits and disposing of items outside of bags that were unsafe for employees to handle.]

Voyent Alert

After the recent PDWA that was issued, Council decided to reinstate Voyent Alert! for sending emergency and general information to the public. It will be cost shared with the RM of Wood River No. 74.

Town residents are therefore asked to please re-join in order to be updated on local emergencies as soon as possible after the Town is aware of such. See advertisement above.

Precautionary Drinking Water Advisory

On July 6, 2025, a Precautionary Drinking Water Advisory was issued for the Town of Lafleche water distribution system. After consulting, it was recommended that all RO membranes be replaced. Further sampling and cleaning of the RO membranes has been done to verify that this is one of the problems. There are two UF membranes that needed to be replaced fully in the past, but unfortunately only some cells within the membranes were replaced, so now the Town faces having to replace these membranes in their entirety. The RO and UF membrane replacement will cost upwards of $100,000; as soon as these membranes are replaced, the Town will need to sample consecutively until compliant. If you have any more questions pertaining to this, please do not hesitate to contact the Town Office.

Raw Water Reminder

Raw water has been up and running since mid-May. Watering days for properties are as follows:  North of 4th Ave are on odd numbered days (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) and South of 4th Ave are on even numbered days (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.). Raw water is shut off on the 31st of each month in which there are 31 days. Please remember that in the event you use raw water on a day that you are not scheduled to, there will be consequences.

This year has seen quite a few raw water breaks needing repairs. Thank goodness Mother Nature has showered much needed rain!!
